Start from the beginning

I know a lot of authors get asked, “Where did you get the idea for your book?” So I thought I might share how the Mortal Scales got their beginning.

I’ve always been fascinated by dreams. Science still can’t entirely explain why we dream, or exactly how it works, and yet, since the beginning of “time”, there are records and stories of dreamers, dreams, and the realms beyond the waking world. My own question of “where do we go when we dream?” became something akin to Harley’s research – What if our dreams aren’t just a place of our own subconscious imagining, but a memory of somewhere our ancestors went, but that we can no long reach?

Aboriginal beliefs speak of The Dreaming. Both a time of creation, and a spiritual reality.

Greek mythology includes a family of gods who shaped the dreams of mortals, guiding the sleeper through the halls of the realms beyond. To teach; to warn; to entice.

The bible speaks of Joseph, interpreting the dreams of the baker, the wine pourer, and even the Pharaoh, himself.

The fae are referred to as creatures of dream. Legends and creatures only half-seen, remembered only on the peripheries of our world, where we may walk surrounded by stone and sky, but if I cannot see the wind except for how it moves the leaves, who am I to say that there might not be other things present beyond my simple sight?

And so, the Fae realm of the Mortal Scales was born. A realm where the hidden people reside, where the very ground, itself, is imbued with the magic that created it; The magic of life, itself.

A realm where impossible dreams might just become possible reality.

It certainly is a lovely thought.
